Recognizing emerging trends in produce distribution, the corrugated packaging
industry has developed a modular packaging system referred to as the corrugated
Common Footprint Standard. The corrugated “common footprint”
establishes recommended length and width dimensions and interlocking stacking
features (tabs and receptacles) for corrugated containers to facilitate
efficient loading, handling, storage and shipment of produce (fresh fruits and
vegetables) on standardized pallets.
This “common footprint” standard applies to corrugated containers
used to ship produce from the growing or initial packaging location to a retail
location, usually through a distribution center, and includes containers that
are designed to display produce at the retail locations.

The International Corrugated Case Association (ICCA) encourages its
members to replicate either the European or the U.S. Common Footprint Standards
so that produce shipping containers, specified by a customer to be manufactured
under the “common footprint” guideline, are compatible with each
other across international boundaries. The European and U.S. standards are
harmonized—boxes made to either specification can stack and work together.
